Christofias the new President
Demitris Christofias, the leftwing AKEL party leader, won on February 24th the second round of the presidential elections in Cyprus by a close to 7% lead over Ioannis Kasoulides. Christofias counted on his popularity among both Greek and Turkish Cypriots and his closer connection with the working masses.
Christofias succeeds in power Tassos Papadopoulos who failed to enter the second round one week earlier. Tragically, a few months later in December, 2008 Papadopoulos lost the battle for his life to a terminal illness.
The new President decided it is time to concentrate more on his presidential duties stepping down from his party leadership. Proceedings were under way in AKEL January 2009 to elect the new General Secretary of the party's Central Committee. The new elected leader of the party is Andros Kyprianou, a 53 year old moderate statesman.
Negotiations still under way
The President of Cyprus Demitris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat are having talks in Nicosia in an effort backed by the UN to resolve the Cyprus issue.
Though no time frames have been set, it is hoped that a final agreed settlement can be reached before the end or this current year 2009. The two leaders have concluded the discussions on the government issue and are now having talks on the property issue. |

Flights to Cyprus now cheaper
The Cyprus government, among other measures in an effort to boost tourism on the island amidst the international crisis, has set landing charges for aircraft to Larnaca and Paphos airports to zero. As a result, airline fares for all flights to Cyprus are expected to be a bit cheaper (estimated up to 10%)
The goverment also waved municipal charges on Cyprus hotels bookings and lowered VAT charges for the hotel industry from 8% down to 5%, urging hoteliers and travel agents to offer cheaper holiday packages to visitors. |
