Cyprus Presidential elections:
Papadopoulos on the way out
In an unexpected turn of events on the 17th of February 2008 voters in Cyprus showed Sunday Tassos Papadopoulos the way out of the Presidency giving the lead to European parliamentary Ioannis Kasoulides who is going to compete for the highest office in Cyprus with runnerup Demitris Christofias, the President of the Cyprus Parliament and leader of left wing party AKEL.
Kassoulides, supported mainly by the moderate rightwing Democratic Rally, member of the European Christian Democrats, strongly rallied for the strenghtening of Cyprus' relations within the European Union.
Christofias counted on his popularity among both Greek and Turkish Cypriots and his closer connection with the working masses.
Christofias the next President
Demitris Christofias, the leftwing party leader, won on February 24th the second round of the presidential elections in Cyprus by a close to 7% lead over Ioannis Kasoulides. Christofias succeeds in power Tassos Papadopoulos who failed to enter the second round one week earlier. |

Negotiations under way
The President of Cyprus Demitris Christofias and the Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat agreed in Nicosia to hold talks on resolving the Cyprus issue in June. Meanwhile, committes from both sides are meeting in an efford to resolve as many issues as possible before the two leaders meet in an effort to reach a comprehensive solution to the problem. |
