While Malta itself is the preserve of polite Brits, ham-pink pensioners, and young families on cheap all-inclusive holidays, the magnificent neighboring island of Gozo remains basically untouched. This could have something to do with the legend that it was home to Calypso, who lured Odysseus there and kept him captive in her cave for seven years. If you, on the other hand, fearlessly give in to temptation, Gozo, with its sleepy pace, stunning beaches, and intriguing ruins, is heaven on earth. That said, before heading to the island, plan on spending a day in Valletta, the charming capital of Malta and one of the world's most impressive fortified cities. And make a special effort to see two superb Ca-ravaggios The Beheading of John the Baptist and Saint Jerome, both inside the resplendent Baroque St. John's Co-Cathedral as well as the wonderful National Museum of Archaeology. |
