Majorca’s history dates the Phoenicians (around the 7th century BC), although there is evidence of earlier human occupation. It was the Phoenicians who began to build settlements and to communicate with the outside world. The tourist boom of the 1960s turned Majorca into the most advanced holiday centre of the Mediterranean, providing accommodation and diversions for both monied jet-setters and economy-minded package-holiday tourists from France, Germany, Scandinavia and the UK. Palma is now the busiest airport in Europe during high season, and the economy of the Balearics is primarily based on tourism. Each summer, members of the Spanish royal family spend their holidays in the Marivent Palace near Palma. With approximately 3,600 sq. km (1,400 sq. miles), Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, which lie in the Mediterranean Sea some 92 km (57 miles) off the coast of Alicante. |
